Do you long for time to deepen into a passion, a calling, or a life purpose?

Wilderness-based rites of passage have existed in many traditional cultures on earth. Very often, these critical parts of human life were periods of solo time where one would be alone and away from their community in order to understand their place in it. In some cultures, one is expected to prepare for a wander or a fast in the wilderness when they feel ‘called.’ In other cultures, there are allotted times of life when people are expected to undertake such ventures, or certain vocations that require it. In all cases, a sacred question is part of this time spent away from everyday life: how to better serve—oneself, one’s community, and perhaps even one’s planet.

We are blessed to live in a time where more and more outfits facilitate wilderness fasts and visionary retreats. The River’s Path puts a twist on this form—a vision quest experience on the river. This trip includes a 48-hour solo during which it is optional to fast, and for that time we will set up base camp in a canyon and will not be traveling. Every participant is encouraged to set an intention for their solo time. During the first two days of the trip, we build community and trust through playful daytime floats and fire-side evening councils in order to be able to articulate and witness each other’s intentions. After the solo time among the red-rock canyons, we return to the temporary and special community we have created so that we can help each other prepare to go ‘back home’ while carrying the experience of our quests on the river.

This trip is for anyone looking to deepen their connection to both nature and self. The river gives us ample space for play and laughter as well as solitude and introspection. We run women’s quests as well as a couples quest. Lauren Bond Kovsky, our lead guide, is trained through Naropa’s Environmental Leadership Master’s program as well as through the Earth-Based Institute’s Transformational Wilderness Guide Training. Lauren’s co-guides bring additional experience from other venues such as the School of Lost Borders and Animas Valley Institute.

No canoeing experience is necessary and all of your river gear (boat, lifejacket, & paddle), food and fluids will be provided. We also provide dry bags for your belongings. Our guides on backcountry trips are certified in Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and are trained in wilderness survival skills.

Cost: $1350 per person. Early bird price is $1095. Maximum 12 participants.
