My first impulse is to stand silently on bank of the Green River with my toes dug deep into Mother Earth, listening intently…breathing deeply…taking it all in…allowing the sounds of Nature to wash over me, to fill me – as a dry well is filled – bringing me back to life… welcoming me back home. I sway and gently move my limbs to acknowledge and assist with this filling…this sacred sonic smudging, allowing every crack and crevice to be nourished and enlivened with sound. Experiencing this visceral transformation…feeling myself becoming part of the fabric of life all around me, I cannot contain my expression, cannot help but take a deep breath, open my mouth and join in the creation of sounds all around me. Participating with all of existence, I resonate with the flapping of Heron wings, with Water flowing over ancient Stone, with the harmony of tiny Wren’s voice and my human companions. My sounds of joy, as well as grief, are gently held in the arms of the Red Rock Canyon and echoed back to me, like a mother who listens and mirrors my experience. I have returned home, while on The River’s Path!
