Head Canoe Guide

PAY RATE: $18 – $22 per hour, commission if you promote and book trips.

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT:

We are looking for 2-3 experienced canoe guides to serve as head guides on our half and full day canoe trips on the St. Vrain River east of Longmont, CO.

The best candidates for this position must embrace The River’s Path’s (TRP) vision and mission and must have the experience and leadership to work with clientele and other staff from diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.  Teamwork, flexibility, confidentiality, creativity, and self-direction are traits of successful employees at TRP. High level communication is a necessity for this position.

Work will start April 20 with training and generally be completed by the end of August. There may be a few trips in September and October as well.

The work hours are highly variable and depend on how many trips are scheduled. Must be able to commit to availability for 10-30 hours per week mid June through mid August including many weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
may include but not limited to:

  • Act as head guide for 2-5 half and full day canoe trips per week.
  • Coordinate with the Day Trip Coordinator to ensure a guide to participant ratio of 1:5.
  • Provide safety and canoe instruction to clients
  • Manage unexpected situations on the river: safety considerations, accidents,  interpersonal challenges, and changing weather conditions.
  • Shuttle clients in a 15 passenger van with a canoe trailer (training provided)
  • Community networking and promotion of canoe trips to local groups, organizations, and businesses.
  • Post on Instagram and Facebook after each trip.
  • Coordinate with logistics coordinator for maintenance and repair of TRP equipment

REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:

Current driver’s license with clean driving record, Wilderness First Aid (preferably Wilderness First Responder!), CPR, Swiftwater Rescue,  500 river miles in accordance with Colorado State trip leader requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Expert river canoeist
  • Experienced naturalist
  • Skilled in the use of Google Drive, Sheets,  Instagram, and Facebook
  • Able to lift 80lb canoes with assistance
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Comfortable driving a 15 passenger van with a canoe trailer
  • Comfortable with collaboration and deep open communication
  • Comfortable managing a sometimes complicated schedule of river trips.
  • Able to manage a flexible and sometimes hard-to-predict work schedule. The right candidate understands that the number of hours they will work  depends on number of trips scheduled.
  • The right candidate for this position will be motivated to help The Rivers Path grow by reaching out to businesses and organizations to promote trips.

PREFERRED:

  • BA/BS in Environmental Studies, Education, Psychology, Biology, or related field.
  • Social media marketing skills
